10/26/2019 Power Rangers Universe
So, as we all know, the Power Rangers series suffers from big ideas on a low budget. This is what leads to the weird, goofy monsters and costumes that we sometimes get. I have a different theory though. An in-universe theory. We are not seeing these events unfold as they happen, nor are we watching a retelling of these events. We are seeing these events through the memories of the Rangers, now that they are retired and are trying to cope with what happened.
We are seeing the events the way that the broken, traumatized brains of the Rangers remember them, so as not to damage the Rangers psyche any further. My first point: The Enemies. In each series, the enemies are often very cheap looking. They look like big, goofy costumes.
I believe the Rangers see them this way, because their true forms were too disturbing. Imagine these over the top characters as real flesh and blood. They go from “creepy kids show characters” to something from the Warhammer 40k series. These are legitimate monsters from other dimensions and outer space. You’re average human would have a nervous breakdown just knowing of their existence.

These teenagers, and young adults, are now fighting these things up close and personal. These things are attempting to kill them in terrifying ways. This can not be good for their mental health. This is why they remember them as cheaply made costumes, because how they truly looked was enough to scar the Rangers. Some of the monsters have mouths that do not move, yet they seem to speak normally. This is because they were telepathic, and the Rangers are finding middle ground between having some eldritch horror speak directly into their minds, and something seemingly harmless.Second: The FightsDespite the massive, kaiju-style fights that go down, and the all out brawls that happen in public, casualties are rarely seen or mentioned.
I believe this is because the bystander body count for these fights are massive. They’re constantly shooting lasers and employing magic. There’s a bigger possibility that someone will catch a stray shot than not.
The giant fights happen at the drop of a hat, in the middle of crowded cities. Unless the government has created citywide bunkers (which I highly doubt, considering the complete lack of military response we often see) there’s no way for everyone to get out in time. People are dying at an alarming rate, and the Rangers are doing their best to keep humanity alive. We see this in other series, though. Massive fights with no obvious collateral damage. The difference here, is that the Rangers often interact with the people in the surrounding area.
We see these living breathing cities, sometimes moments before the fight. These people are dying, but the Rangers block that out, because they did what they had to do.Third: The aforementioned townsfolk. They are always happy and cheery, when the Rangers interact with them.
There are moments of despair, but nothing ever really matches up with the carnage and destruction that happens every week. The Rangers will blow through the city, fighting something right out of a nightmare, and next week the townspeople will greet them with “Hey, brah!”Even when they don’t know that the kids are Rangers.I think this is because the Rangers are remembering the downtrodden folks, just trying to find the silver lining in the apocalypse, and amplifying their attitude to cover all of the human pain that they saw.Fourth: the lack of blood and real injuriesIn each series, the Rangers employ a myriad of different weapons, each one capable of horrifying damage in real life. Yet, somehow, every blow ends in a comic, fireworks-like explosion. Be it blade, laser, or magic.I believe this is to protect their minds from the real harm they caused. They are kids, who go from living regular lives, to maiming evil monstrosities, burning flesh to the bone, and whatever horrible injuries that their magic can inflict. They’re killing monsters, but blood is blood. Burning flesh is still burning flesh. On top of that, the Rangers never really sustain any real injuries.
They get tossed around a bit, and come away with only a limp or some other family friendly, non-graphic injury. This is to block out all of the horrific bruises and broken bones that come from having an ageless demon from the pits of hell beat them mercilessly. They may even have lost limbs, and used the Force to regenerate. Imagine losing a limb in every fight, then as soon as it’s functional, losing another one. This is why they remember every injury as superficial.
It’s the only way to stay sane. Conclusion:We see multiple scenarios where, in real life, the Rangers would be facing mind-breaking horror, yet in their universe everything is campy and usually unpleasant at the most. I believe this is because we are seeing the Rangers escapades as they remember them. Sunny, bright, and over the top. This is the only way they can remember the bloody, apocalyptic struggle for survival that was their developing years without going completely mad.
